The Ongoing Dawn of a New Era in Transportation: Robo-Taxis, Flying Cars, and Strategic Alliances

CX Insights - Trend Watch - Automotive Industry (ICYMI October 2024)

Once upon a time in the bustling world of urban innovation, the most we could expect was a more efficient bus, or in very "hip" cities, the dawn of shared transportation via bicycle rental kiosks. Now, shiny new autonomous electric vehicles, delivery robots, and even electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) flying vehicles are vying for a chance to serve us. What could possibly be next? Jetpacks for our pets?

| THE ROBO-TAXI REVOLUTION (OR WILL IT BE AN EVOLUTION?)

In Austin, Texas, Waymo's self-driving taxis have started picking up passengers, eliciting mixed reactions. Tech enthusiasts are excited about the convenience, while traditionalists remain skeptical. Waymo's sleek, driverless cars navigate the streets with precision, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility.

But the story doesn’t end in Austin. Across the Atlantic, in bustling metropolises and quiet towns alike, companies like Uber are expanding their fleets of self-driving taxis and delivery robots. Uber’s vision of an autonomous future included everything from ride-hailing to food delivery, all managed by robots designed to improve efficiency and reduce human error. Imagine a robot delivering your pizza—no more awkward small talk with the delivery guy.

October’s hype on autonomous vehicles was partly fueled by Tesla's announcements. While there was a lot of excitement, Wall Street was a cautious observer. Investors recognized the potential for profit in these futuristic fleets but also worried about the practicalities and profitability of scaling these high-tech marvels. The verdict was still out, and the financial world was on tenterhooks, waiting to see if robo-taxis would steer the market into a new era.

| HIGH HOPES IN THE SKIES

Above the city skyline, another revolution is taking flight. A bold startup has developed pilotless flying vehicles to deliver blood for the U.S. Army, promising to save lives by quickly transporting critical supplies to remote and hard-to-reach locations.

Meanwhile, in Italy, an air taxi venture was preparing to launch its services, offering a swift and scenic alternative to ground transportation. With Rome’s ancient streets and sprawling countryside, the air taxis promised not just a mode of transport, but an experience. Who needs a gondola ride in Venice when you can fly over the Colosseum?

New York City is also gearing up for its own airborne leap. Takeoff and landing sites are being prepared across the city, as FAA regulations pave the way for flying taxis to become a reality. The Big Apple is on the brink of a vertical commute revolution. Looks like there will be more than pizzas up in the air!

| THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS

As mentioned in last month’s entry, “bromances" are key to future success. Behind every technological leap, there were powerful partnerships fueling innovation. Hyundai and Toyota, two giants of the automotive world, were deepening their collaboration in hydrogen and robotics. This alliance aimed to develop sustainable technologies that would lead the way into a cleaner, smarter future. Besides, who doesn't love a good bromance?

The collaboration didn't stop there. Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute announced a joint venture to advance robotics research. Together, they were pushing the boundaries of what robots could do, from improving automotive manufacturing to developing next-gen household helpers. Imagine a robot that can cook, clean, and even walk your dog. Soon everyone will be keeping up with the Jetsons!

Moreover, strategic alliances were reshaping the automotive supply chains. Companies recognized that by working together, they could streamline operations, cut costs, and foster innovation. These alliances were not just about survival-they were about thriving in a competitive, ever-evolving market. It's like a buddy system for businesses.

Finally, we don’t want to leave you this month without alerting you to a further “autonomous” innovation that should help our pocketbooks - thanks to Hyundai, radar happy highway patrols will need to work harder to earn their keep. In the near future, Hyundai will install a system in the new Genesis model, which frees drivers from worrying about possible fines for speeding.

That’s your ICYMI for this month. The transportation industry is rapidly evolving with advancements in autonomous vehicles, flying cars, and strategic partnerships. We're on the brink of a future where your pizza might be delivered by a robot, your commute could involve flying over traffic, and car companies are forming "bromances" to bring us cleaner, smarter technologies. Buckle up and don’t forget your shades, this future is bright! Stay tuned for next month’s ICYMI, giving you all the news you need to know in one insightful recap.
